One group’s aspirational drawing of what the modern health and safety professional should look like – worthy of the Tate?!
Today we led the first Communication and Influencing Skills for health and safety professionals from UPP’s lovely offices in Gracechurch Street. Present were representatives from Land Securities, Laing O Rourke, Heathrow Airport, ITV, UPP, Middlesex University, Babcock, BT, BUPA, CBRE and ISG.
The morning was spent looking at where the profession is in its evolution and where the group felt it should be aspiring to. Words like “coaching, inspiring, enabling, positive, listening, courageous” were used by the group who had lively discussion around whether “detect and correct” was still a requirement for the modern health and safety professional – they felt that it was – but that consideration should always be given to how to couch feedback.
In the afternoon we looked at the power of active, non-judgemental listening and how to provide constructive feedback, finally moving on to how to engage emotions using story telling in health and safety.
Feedback from delegates “Very engaging, exceeded my expectations, relevant, a great group and very well facilitated” “Great session which has me thinking” “This sort of session unlocks the hidden passion and enthusiasm of so many who have hidden it”.
